Why I Started Looking Past the Tire Quote

I'm the office administrator for a 140-person energy services company. That means I handle purchasing for three locations—roughly $430,000 a year in vendor spend, from windshield wipers to hydraulic hoses. I report to both operations and finance, which is code for "get blamed either way."

The Comparison: Continental vs. Hawk Tires

Let me be clear about the method. This isn't a lab test. It's 18 months of real data from 12 Ford F-250s and F-350s running around West Texas. Some are on pavement, most are on gravel and ranch roads. Your operation may be different—but the way to think about it is the same.

The report Trevor pulled is what he calls the "white stats." It's just a telematics export with a plain white background and rows of numbers: truck, tire, date installed, date replaced, mileage, cost, and any service calls. Honestly, the name isn't clever. But the data is useful.

But the white stats report told a different story. Hawk tires averaged 38,000 miles before replacement. Continental averaged 51,000 miles. Run those numbers: Hawk is $0.0038 per mile; Continental is $0.0033 per mile. The "cheap" tire costs 15% more per mile before you add in any downtime.

That was the first surprise. Trevor assumed the lower price meant lower cost. It doesn't.

2. Cost per Mile: Continental Pulled Ahead

Hawk did have one advantage: it was lighter, and on the highway the trucks got about 0.4 mpg better with Hawk. Over the life of a tire, that's roughly $35 in fuel savings. But Hawk gave up about 13,000 miles of life compared with Continental. The fuel gain didn't come close to covering the gap.

I'm not going to claim Continental is perfect. We've had Continental sidewall bubbles on a couple of trucks that were running overloaded. The difference is how often it happens and what the failure costs.

What most people don't realize is that tire warranties are often prorated. When a Hawk tire failed with 22,000 miles on it, the "warranty" didn't give us a free tire. It gave us a percentage off a new tire, and we still paid for mounting and balancing. The claim took three weeks to process.

3. Downtime and Availability: The Hidden Line Item

Here's something vendors won't tell you: the first quote is almost never the final price. You have to ask about freight, disposal fees, what happens if a tire fails in the field, and who handles the paperwork.

In our first year of testing, we had two Hawk sidewall failures. One was on a truck towing a compressor. The crew lost half a day waiting for a replacement. If you count the service call, the overtime, and the lost crew time, the cost of that one event was more than the total annual savings from switching to Hawk.

4. Invoicing, Claims, and Compliance: The Real Difference

With the Continental distributor, I get a clean, itemized invoice, a warranty certificate, and the load-rating spec for our safety file. That matters because our trucks pull gooseneck trailers, and the tire load rating has to match the vehicle's door sticker and the trailer load.

With one Hawk dealer, the first invoice was handwritten. Finance rejected it. I had to ask twice for a corrected version, and it took 10 days. That's not a tire problem; it's an administrative cost. But it's still a cost.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), a supplier has to substantiate claims about durability, mileage, or environmental benefits. We started asking for that substantiation in writing. Most vendors can provide it. Some can't. If a vendor can't show you the test data behind a "50,000-mile" claim, that tells you something.

So What Should You Buy?

If you're asking "difference between Hawk and Continental" and hoping for a simple answer, I get it. But the answer depends on the use.

For light trucks that stay on pavement and don't tow heavy loads, Hawk is probably fine. A tire failure there is an inconvenience, not a production event. For our backup vehicles, which might go 5,000 miles a year, I'd happily put a budget tire on them.

For vehicles that work in remote areas, carry heavy loads, or need to get a crew to a site on time, Continental made sense in our data. The higher unit price buys more miles, fewer roadside events, and less administrative friction.

My practical advice:

  • Pull your own data before comparing quotes. Even six months of replacement history helps.
  • Calculate cost per mile, not just the quote price.
  • Ask for the warranty worksheet and the load-rating spec in writing.
  • Confirm what the invoice looks like before you order.
  • Ask vendors to substantiate durability claims, per FTC guidance.

Trevor and I ended up standardizing on Continental for the field trucks and keeping the cheaper line on two low-risk vehicles. That may not be your answer, but it's the answer the data gave us.
