Continental Quality Checklist: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Approve a Specification

If you searched for “continental drift activity” or “how to make pothos”, this is probably not the page you expected. If you need the 2026 Winter Olympics skiing schedule, I can’t help you there either. But the fact that you landed here proves a useful point: words are only clear when the context is clear. That’s where most quality problems start—before a single part is made.

I’m a quality/compliance manager at Continental. I review product specifications, labels, and customer-facing documents before they ship—roughly 200 items a year. In Q1 2024, 11% of first submissions failed review because the written requirement and the real application didn’t line up. Not because people were careless. Because they used shorthand.

This is the checklist I use when approving anything where the cost of “almost right” is high. It’s aimed at buyers, engineers, and project managers evaluating industrial equipment, components, or custom parts.

Who should use this checklist

Use this before approving a quote, a sample, a drawing, or a first article. It’s especially useful if you’re working with a global supplier, because one word can mean different things in different departments: Continental the tire maker, Continental the vehicle model, or continental as in a continent.

Six steps. One final warning. Let’s get to it.

Step 1: Document the application before you document the part

Before I check a part number, I check the environment where the part will live. A fan motor that works in an indoor lab might fail in a dusty mining operation. A tire rated for highway use is not automatically the right fit for an underground loader.

Write down the operating conditions first: maximum load, temperature range, duty cycle, chemical exposure, and even storage conditions. If you need a tire for a 1966 Lincoln Continental show car, the environment is “dry pavement and careful driving.” That’s very different from a construction site.

Checkpoint: If you can’t describe the operating environment in two sentences, keep digging.

Step 2: Disambiguate names, years, and contexts

A product name is not a specification. The clearest example in our industry is the word “Continental.”

A quote request once came in with the subject line: “Tires for a 66 Continental.” A new team member assumed the buyer wanted Continental brand tires because, well, that’s our name. Wrong. The buyer was restoring a 1966 Lincoln Continental, built by Ford. They just wanted tires that fit the car.

“Continental” was both the supplier’s brand and the vehicle’s model name. It took an email and a phone call to sort out what should have taken one clarifying question at the start. Or rather, one clarifying question before the quote went out.

Checkpoint: Ask: “Does this name mean the same thing to the supplier, the warehouse, and the end user?”

Step 3: Ask what is NOT included before you ask for the price

Transparent pricing is a quality characteristic. It’s not just about cost; it’s about trust. I’ve learned to ask “what’s not included?” before I ask the price. If a quote says $5,000, the invoice should say $5,000.

But often there are freight charges, tooling amortization, calibration fees, documentation fees, or rush premiums that magically appear later. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. Not a price problem. A communication problem.

That applies internally too. When I see a drawing with the note “all dimensions in mm unless stated,” I ask what the exceptions are. Exceptions are where mistakes feed.

Checkpoint: Ask for a total-cost breakdown with every fee labeled. If a fee is not listed, assume it will appear later.

Step 4: Put a number to every adjective

“High quality” means nothing. “Premium grade” means nothing. “Custom heavy duty” means nothing until I know the standard.

In Q1 2024, we received a batch of rubber gaskets with a hardness reading just outside our tolerance. The vendor said it was “within industry standard.” I don’t doubt that. But our specification was tighter because the application required it. The batch went back.

When you review a spec, look for words that need a number. “Sufficient impact resistance”—sufficient to what? “Suitable for outdoor use”—for how many years? If the answer isn’t in writing, it hasn’t been defined.

Checkpoint: Circle every adjective and demand a number next to it.

Step 5: Confirm it in writing, even with long-time suppliers

One of my biggest regrets involves verbal confirmation. A long-time supplier promised to rush a modified component to meet a customer launch. I knew I should get it in writing, but I thought, “We’ve worked together for years—what are the odds?”

The odds caught up with me. The component arrived late, the launch slipped, and the redo cost $22,000 plus overtime freight. Now I treat every verbal agreement like a red flag. If it’s not in a document, it didn’t happen.

Checkpoint: Does an email or signed document exist? No? Then the agreement is incomplete.

Step 6: Verify after every revision, not just the first order

“Same as last time” is a phrase I’ve learned to distrust. In 2022, a tooling change at a supplier shifted a mounting bracket by 4 mm. The part looked identical. The production fit was wrong.

After any change—material supplier, tooling, QC protocol, packaging—run the full inspection again. Not a quick visual. Full dimensional check, function test, and if the product has brand colors, a color check.

Color might sound cosmetic, but it matters on equipment labels and OEM parts. We use the Pantone Matching System to define critical colors. For a brand-critical color, target Delta E below 2; anything above 4 is visible to the untrained eye. If the label doesn’t match, what else didn’t they check?

Checkpoint: Is this the first approval after a change? If yes, inspect it as if it were a brand-new part.

Three mistakes that still show up

First, confusing “equivalent to OEM” with “same as the drawing.” They are not the same. OEM parts may have different tolerance ranges.

Second, approving a sample but not production parts. A sample can be hand-finished. Production parts are made on a different line. Check both.

Third, skipping inspection because the supplier has a quality certificate. A certificate says they have a system, not that each part is correct. In 2023, we quarantined 8,000 units because a cosmetic defect appeared only after the product sat in storage. The supplier’s certificate was current. The defect was still real.

The final check

Here’s the thing: I’m not asking you to become a quality department. I’m asking you to add a 10-minute confirmation step before you approve anything expensive.

Ask what application the part will see. Ask what the words mean. Ask what’s not included. Ask for the number behind the adjective. Put the answer in writing. And check again after any change.
