What Changed
I decided to stay with the current supplier and standardize on Continental tires for the pickup trucks. Not because the brand is famous or because I liked the logo. Over the next twelve months, tire-related downtime dropped by about a third. We had fewer roadside failures. The maintenance team stopped treating tire replacements as emergency events. That’s a cost saving that does not show up on a purchase order.
Efficiency isn’t about approving the first quote. It’s about building a system that catches the hidden cost before it reaches an invoice. That system is why we can run a smaller maintenance staff than our size would usually require, and why our service schedule stays predictable even in the busy season.
I don’t buy based on sticker price anymore. I do not trust a quote that leaves out line items. Close call.
The Lesson

Honestly, I’m not sure the lower-priced vendor intentionally hid those fees. Maybe they assumed we would ask for a breakdown, and maybe their other customers always did. That doesn’t change the invoice. “Maybe” doesn’t pay bills.
